Don Josef de Ribas (born in Naples of Irish and Spanish stock) is a soldier of fortune, participated in all wars in which Russian Empire participated that time, took part in many adventures in of Russian Empress Catherine the Great service.
He stormed Turkish fortress of Khadzhibei (territory of the modern Odessa city). Don Josef de Ribas gave Russian Empress Catherine the Great the idea to found Odessa city on the place of occupied by Russian troops Khadzhibei fortress.
De Ribas together with his collaborator Franz de Volan, a Dutch engineer, investigated bay of Khadzhibei fortress and discovered that it’s ice free, safe for large fleets and deep - the best place to build seaport here. Odessa seaport was constructed by design of Naples and Livorno seaports.
