In 1794 Russian Empress Catherine the Great, signed an order in which she ordered to build seaport town on the place of former Turkish fortress “Khadzibey”. At the end of summer 1794 (August 22 – old style calendar, September 02 – new style calendar) the new settlement was founded. Since that time, the 2nd of September is the birthday of Odessa. A coat-of-arms was given to the town. This town was named “Odessa”.

Profitable geographical position of town Odessa (merchant ways between East and West), the Black Sea bay, convenient for navigation all the year attracted a lot of merchants from all the world to Odessa.

 

Odessa Sea Port


From the early beginning of Odessa city foundation Odessa seaport was the major port on the Black Sea, which allowed Russian Empire to be in close relationships with the countries, which are washed by The Black Sea and The Mediterranean Seas. Since then over 200 years have passed and Odessa Seaport is the largest seaport of Ukraine, so called, southern gate of Ukraine.

With the ruination of the Soviet Union, Odessa seaport development was sharply reduced. However, it was lucky to get investments to be modernized and increased. The cargo nomenclature was interchanged: black metal, mineral fertilizers, grain and petroleum are mostly transshipped by Odessa seaport. Passenger terminal accepts passenger ships even from overseas countries. There are regular connections with Israel, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria nad Georgia.
