Odessa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet

(Address: 1 Chaikovskiy Lane). The Opera & Ballet Theatre is the elder and the most famous among a great number of cultural institutions. The first building of Odessa Opera house was built in 1809 and the first performance took place in February 1810. The first stage of Odessa Opera House was one act opera "A New Family" by Fralih. In 1873 the theatre was completely burnt. New theatre was built in 1887. To build new Odessa Opera House were taken draws of Austrian architects F. Felner Y. Helmer.


The building of Odessa Opera and Ballet House is made in the style of Vienna "baroque”. That times this style was the major and the most popular in the European art.


There is a sculptural group over the front: it is Melpomena sitting in the chariot, a patroness of art. There are also groups of sculptures from the ancient mythology. There are two sculptural groups on the pedestal near the central entrance. These sculptural groups are personifying Tragedy and Comedy. There busts of the most famous Russian art and literature creators (in the bays of the upper circle of the building): Glinka, Pushkin, Griboyedov, Gogol. The hall of the Opera House is the most beautiful part of the building. It’s designed in "rococo" style. The ceiling is painted by Lefler. It depicts Shakespeare’s scenes from "Hamlet", "A Dream in the Summer Night", "The Winter Fairytale" and “As You Like It". Perfect acoustics allows delivering even a whisper from the stage to any part of the hall.


Odessa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet is also interesting by its creative biography. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov, Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff and others world known outstanding composers performed their works here. The great singers such as Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin, Antonina Vasilievna Nezhdanova, Leonid Sobinov, Tito Ruffo, Batistini, Jeraldoni sang here. The theatre was granted the title of "Academic" in 1926.


The ballet group of the theatre consists of 50 people. The troupe of opera singers consists of 40 people. They are National artists of Ukraine, Laureates of International Contests.
