Deribasovskaya Street

is named after Don Josef de Ribas. This street is the very heart of Odessa. Deribasovskaya Street is famous by its unique character is magnificent architecture, crowds of people leisurely sitting on terraces of numerous cafes, bars and restaurants, perfect cobblestones, no vehicle traffic and big shady linden trees. Deribasovskaya is leading to the City Gardens of Odessa with its fountain, summerhouse and sculpture of lion and lioness. Odessa City Garden was constructed shortly after the foundation of Odessa and was its first park.

Deribasovskaya Street is named after Don Josef de Ribas, a soldier of fortune, participated in all wars in which Russian Empire participated that time, took part in many adventures in of Russian Empress Catherine the Great service. He stormed Turkish fortress of Khadzhibei (territory of the modern Odessa city). Don Josef de Ribas gave Russian Empress Catherine the Great the idea to found Odessa city on the place of occupied by Russian troops Khadzhibei fortress

De Ribas together with his collaborator Franz de Volan, a Dutch engineer, investigated bay of Khadzhibei fortress and discovered that it’s ice free, safe for large fleets and deep - the best place to build seaport here. Odessa seaport was constructed by design of Naples and Livorno seaports

Sobornaya Square

houses an impressive looking Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. Sobornaya Square is a pleasant location to take in the scenery while sitting on a bench, people watch or do a little shopping in the Passage shopping mall, located directly across it. Even if you have no desire to shop, it is worth seeing this work of art.

In 1795 the Nickolayev Church was built on Sobornaya Square. The cathedral was one of the biggest in Russia. In 1936 Stalin order the Cathedral to be destroyed. In a cowardly manner the cathedral was dynamited in the night. Bricks recovered from the site were used to build a school. Now the Cathedral is rebuilt. To rebuild the cathedral the architects had only the old paintings and drawings. Anyway they succeeded in the rebuilding. The Cathedral is one of the most important monuments of the city's history and culture.

Odessa City Hall

is one of the main attractions of Odessa. Odessa City Hall building (Stock Exchange in the past) is one of the most beautiful buildings in Odessa Ukraine. Odessa City Hall is located on the crossing of Primorskiy Boulevard, Chaikovskogo Lane and Pushkinskaya Street. In front of Odessa City Hall building is a small square, called “Dumaskaya” with a monument to Pushkin, Russian National poet; and bronze cannon, extracted from French frigate “Tiger”, sunk by Russian troops on the Black Sea.
 
The building of Odessa City Hall was designed by the architect was Franz Boffo. The building of Odessa City Hall building looks like the Alexander Palace in Royal Village and was built in classical style. At the top of the building of city council there is bell-clock, which strikes hour with a melody about Odessa city. On either side of the building there are the statues of ancient mythology, which symbolize day and night
