At the west end of Primorskiy Boulevard there
is Grecian colonnade overlooking the harbor and providing a nice view
of the bay. It was build during the reign of Duke Vorontsov, governor
of Odessa region that time. The Grecian colonnade is located just opposite
governor's palace, which is also called “Vorontsov Palace”
The palace was heavily damaged in 1854 when the British and French bombarded
Odessa (Crimean war).
Duke Mikhail Semenovich Vorontsov (1782 – 1856).
The Governor-general of New Russia and Bessarabia, commander of the Russian forces in Wellington's allied army 1815 against Napoleon, the governor-general of the Caucasus. In 1854 was granted the rank of Prince by king of Russia, he built famous “Vorontsov Palace” in Crimea. Died and buried in Odessa cathedral.
