Odessa in Ukraine


In accordance to European standards Odessa is young city, In 2010 Odessa Ukraine has celebrated the 216 Anniversary. Catherine The Great founded Odessa in 1794 when Russian Empress solved, that the port on The Black Sea is necessary to the country for expansion of communications with the Europe. On one of legends the first mayors of city, Duke De Richelieu faithfully served to Russia, but grown in France, has decided to construct new city, which would become more beautiful than Paris. From first days of existence the city promised to be same beautiful, as well as St. Petersburg, therefore became known as Southern Palmyra. Odessa is known for the cultural traditions and beautiful architecture. The residents of Odessa are proud of that many artists, writers and scientists lived in their city.

The city of Odessa is seaport at northwest coast of the Black Sea, the capital of humour. Odessa is one of the greatest cities of Ukraine, a southern gate of the state. The biography of Odessa is sated by the historical events, kept in names almost 1400 streets, the areas, prospectuses, parkways, in monuments of history and culture. In short term the city became not only "a southern window of Ukraine to the Europe" with remarkable harbour on teh Black Sea, but also the significant cultural center. There are seven theatres, a philharmonics, circus, opera and ballet theatre in Odessa Ukraine.

Every year Odessa is visited by hundred thousands of tourists. The Black Sea, sights, mild warm climate, beautiful sea beaches, new buildings and surprising architecture of old Odessa attract tourists from all the world.

Odessa - one of the most picturesque cities of Ukraine. It is necessary to visit well-known the Privoz Market, Deribasovskaya Street, the Odessa Opera and ballet theatre, and Odessa steps, monuments of defense of Odessa, hospital, seaside parkway and the Semicircular area with monument to Richelieu, Palaces of Vorontsov, Maryshkina and Pototsky, Uspenskiy monastery and the Theological seminary, the Old stock exchange, the Odessa Seaport etc. A great interest also will cause charming streets: Pushkinskaya, Rishelyevskaya, Lanzheronovskaya, well-known Moldovanka District, a unique complex of underground developments ("the Odessa catacombs" ), ruins of a Turkish fortress in Odessa recreation park, St. Maria Magdaliny's church, and also the first class museums - Archeological (the richest collection of the Egyptian, Scythian and antique antiquities), Art Museum, the Museum of Literature, the Museum of western and oriental art, Pushkin museum and others. Odessa is famous by its recreational and resort zones: Arcadia, Otrada, Lanzheron, Dolphin and Luzanovka.

There is well-known Odessa ladder having 192 steps in Odessa. Governor Vorontsov presented wife Elizabeth a ladder and it cost was 800 thousand Russian roubles. During the Soviet time the ladder has been renamed into memory of uprising on a battleship "Potyomkin" in 1905. The construction of this huge ladder began in 1837 and finished in 1841. The author of the project was F.Boffo, architect, who has carefully developed proportions of a construction.

Having arrived to Odessa seaport and going up Odessa steps, you will reach Seaside parkway (Primorskiy Boulevard) — the most beautiful in city. From here the panorama of port is well visible. Along all parkway fine architectural ensembles last, here, near one of the most beautiful buildings of Odessa, the monument to Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

Seaside parkway is a favourite place for walking of city dwellers and visitors. Do not miss th elargest recreation park of Odessa, which is called after Ukrainian poet Shevchenko. Here’s the monument to heroes, who died during the Second World War. The main street of Odessa is Deribasovskaja named in honour of the first mayor of Odessa – De Ribas, and Grecheskaya Square and City Garden, Sobornaya Square, which are adjoining Deribasovskaya Street.

Sure, do not miss Odessa State academic opera and ballet theatre! It’s one of the major sites of Odessa. Its building constructed in 1884-1887, is one of the most beautiful architectural constructions in Europe. The sculptural groups allegorically representing muses — patronesses of theatre, music, dance, a comedy and tragedy, decorate its portal. The theatre is well known for the history. In it there were outstanding writers and composers, on its stage great singers acted. In total Odessa city has 7 theatres. Odessa State academic opera and ballet theatre is the best one.
